Northern Virginia Weather: Moisture Lurks

STERLING, VA — Following a beginning to the work week that was better than expected save for the morning fog, Tuesday is something of a different story, according to the local branch of the National Weather Service.

Namely, there's an 80 percent chance of showers along with the potential for a thunderstorm after 2 p.m.

Even so, temperatures are expected to remain in the 70s.

Here's the latest NWS forecast:

Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 56. South wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday: A chance of showers, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. High near 72. Southwest wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 8pm, then a chance of showers between 8pm and 2am. Low around 50. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 64. North wind 8 to 11 mph.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 57.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Friday: Showers. High near 57. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday Night: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 47. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 62.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 63.

Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 64.
