ASHBURN, VA — Tanya Snyder, the wife of Washington Football Team owner and CEO Dan Snyder, was announced as the franchise's co-CEO on Tuesday. Tanya Snyder will join her husband in leading the organization as it looks forward to unveiling a new name and logo, the team said in a news release.

Tanya Snyder's appointment as co-CEO comes after the team has been embroiled in controversies related to racism and misogyny in recent years. The Washington Football Team assumed their temporary name last year after claims that the former mascot was racially insensitive. The team also reached a settlement with former cheerleaders over sexual harassment and misconduct allegations, according to the Washington Post.

Tanya Snyder's appointment as co-CEO is the most recent in a number of changes for the team in the past year.

Earlier this year, the Washington Football Team announced that they would not bring back cheerleaders for the 2021 season. Instead, the franchise will field a co-ed dance team.

"Tanya is one of the most important figures in this organization, and that has only become more true over the last 18 months as her involvement has deepened," Dan Snyder said. "She was instrumental in our decision to evolve the brand and modernize our fan experience – including the entertainment team."

Tanya Snyder has led the franchise's philanthropic efforts for more than 20 years, according to a news release from the franchise. The Washington Football Charitable Foundation provides educational and recreational support to more than 150,000 people in D.C., Maryland and Virginia.

"Her appointment as co-CEO formalizes and expands her leadership of the organization at a historic juncture as it looks forward to unveiling a new name and brand for the next era of Washington football," the franchise said in a news release. "Mrs. Snyder is one of few female CEOs in NFL history, furthering the Washington Football Team’s commitment to being a standard bearer of diversity and inclusion in sports."

In the news release, Tanya Snyder said she looked forward to using her new title to continue her philanthropic efforts.

"In my new role, I’ll be positioned to ensure the core values that are central to our philanthropy permeate the entire organization and bring us closer to realizing our goals," Tanya Snyder said.

"We are at a pivotal point in the history of this team as we work to become the gold standard of NFL franchises," she added. "The co-CEO titles reflect our approach to that effort. It is a natural progression, but it’s important to formally recognize the diversity of opinion and perspective that informs everything we do."
