ASHBURN, VA — The Washington Football Team released quarterback Alex Smith on Friday, according to a report from ESPN. Smith was named the league's Comeback Player of the Year in February after recovering from a broken leg and subsequent infection that threatened his life.

Smith started in six games for the Washington Football Team in the 2020 season and helped lead the franchise to its first playoff berth in five years. Last season, Smith started his first game since 2018, when he suffered a gruesome leg injury that broke his tibia and fibula, and required 17 surgeries to fight a dangerous infection.

Releasing Smith will save the Washington Football Team about $15M in cap space for the upcoming season, according to ESPN. The franchise now has two quarterbacks under contract for 2021: Taylor Heinicke and Steven Montez. Those two have started a combined two games in their NFL careers.
