ASHBURN, VA — The Washington Football Team released running back Derrius Guice from the team after he was arrested Friday in Loudoun County on domestic violence-related charges.

Guice turned himself in at the Loudoun Adult Detention Center shortly after 5 p.m. He was reportedly handcuffed in the parking lot of the facility before being taken inside.

The 23-year-old faces charges that include one count of strangulation, which is a felony, a spokesman for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office told the Washington Post. The other charges are three counts of assault and battery and one count of destruction of property.

Washington selected Guice, 23, in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft from Louisana State University. Guice missed his entire rookie season due to injuries. Injuries also derailed his second year in the league when he played in only five games and rushed for 245 yards.

Guice hired Peter Greenspun, a criminal attorney in Northern Virginia who has worked on several high-profile cases, according to the Washington Post.

In its statement, the team said it learned of the potential domestic violence-related incident involving Guice on Thursday. The team said it immediately alerted the NFL.

"We then met with Derrius to inform him that he was excused from all team activity pending a review of the matter," the team said. After his arrest Friday, the team decided to release him.

Washington's off-season has been filled with controversy. In July, the team announced it had retired the Redskins name and was on the hunt for a new team nickname. A few days later, the Washington Post reported that 15 former female employees of the team alleged they were sexually harassed during their time with the team.

In response to the sexual harassment allegations, the team said it had hired D.C. attorney Beth Wilkinson and her firm, Wilkinson Walsh, "to conduct a thorough independent review of this entire matter and help the team set new employee standards for the future."
