DC Area Animal Shelters: Make Plan For Pets In Case Of Illness
Pet owners are asked to make care plans to help animal shelters manage their other urgent pet needs.
FAIRFAX, VA — Eight DC area animal shelters called on pet owners to make long-term plans for their pets in case of hospitalization during the new coronavirus outbreak. The shelters made the request so shelters can be better prepared for stray pets, kitten season and other animal cases requiring immediate attention.
The shelters participating in the request are the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, Animal Welfare League of Arlington, Fairfax County Animal Shelter, Humane Rescue Alliance, Loudoun County Animal Services, Montgomery County Animal Services, Prince George’s County Animal Services and Prince William County Animal Control Bureau.
While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not reported U.S. cases of COVID-19 in pets, it recommends people who are ill with COVID-19 limit contact with animals. Two dogs in Hong Kong tested positive but had no signs of illness; the CDC says additional study is needed on how COVID-19 impacts pets. If possible, another member of your household should care for your pet when you're ill. Handwashing should occur before and after interacting with a pet.

In case a person becomes hospitalized or too ill to care for a pet, the shelters' recommended preparations include finding a temporary caregiver and preparing a pet supply kit. A pet owner should identify two caregivers to be ready if needed. That could include neighbors, family, friends, pet sitters or boarding facilities. The shelters say the best option for a pet is care from a trusted person rather than the shelter.
Pet supply kits should be ready in advance of an emergency situation. This should include the name and contact information for a person caring for your pet and a pack-up person, food, treats, a leash, a crate or carrier, vaccination records, collar with ID tags, medications with instructions, daily care instructions, veterinarian contact information, and other supplies for at least two weeks.
