Fairfax County Announces Orienteering and Geocaching Workshops

From Fairfax County: Whether you’re low-tech or high-tech when it comes to getting around, there’s a program for you at Burke Lake Park on Sunday, March 12, 2017.

In the orienteering workshop from noon to 2 p.m., learn the sport of navigation with a map and compass. You’ll find out how to use a compass, read a topographic map and navigate orienteering courses. Bring your own compass.

From 2 to 4 p.m., navigation gets a technology upgrade in the geocaching workshop. Participants in this program will learn to use Global Positioning System (GPS) units to locate hidden treasure caches in the park. After entering latitude and longitude coordinates into a GPS, students will follow the coordinates to find a hidden object, container or unique geological feature. Bring your own GPS unit, if you can. A limited number will be available to borrow from the instructor at class.

Both workshops are designed for participants age eight to adult. The cost of each is $25 per person. Sign up for one or both!
