Fairfax Supervisors Extend Deadline For Paying Real Estate Tax
The first of two real estate tax payments will be due a month later. There's also a new deadline for reporting vehicle ownership changes.

FAIRFAX, VA — On Tuesday, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted for one-month extensions on the first installment of real estate taxes as well as vehicle and business personal property tax filings.
"Today actions to extend the deadline for personal property and real estate taxes are but some of the ways the Board is trying to help during this difficult time," said Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay. "We’ll keep working with our community on additional actions moving forward."
The first real estate tax payment deadline has changed from July 28 to Aug. 28. The deadline gives more time to homeowners who pay real estate taxes directly to the county. Homeowners who pay taxes with their mortgage payments should contact their mortgage company with questions. Property owners received their assessments beginning in February, but tax bills won't come until the Board of Supervisors adopts the real estate tax rate with the annual budget. The second installment of real estate tax payments are due on Dec. 5.

For the vehicle tax, the deadline for reporting changes such as vehicle ownership and location is moved from May 1 to June 1. The deadline hasn't changed for registering a new vehicle within 60 days of the purchase or a resident moving to Fairfax County. The vehicle tax payment due date was Feb. 15 for vehicles registered after July 1 of the prior year and will be Oct. 5 for vehicles registered before July 1.
Businesses also have a new deadline of June 1 for filing personal property, which includes vehicles, furniture and fixtures, machinery and tools, and computer equipment within Fairfax County as of Jan. 1. New businesses must still file for a business, professional and occupational license within 75 days of the business start date.
