Lake Braddock's Murphy Sizzles at Freedom Games in New York

The Oregon-bound distance runner has a U.S.-best time in the 3,000-meter run and breaks a national record in the 1K, as seen on video.

BURKE, VA — Lake Braddock senior Kate Murphy ran the third-fastest 3,000-meter race in high school history Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Freedom Games in New York, according to Track and Field News.

Not only that, but her time of 9:14.12 was fastest in the nation this season.

Murphy also broke the national junior class record in the 1K with a time of 2:43.

This past fall, Murphy won her second consecutive Virginia 6A state championship while leading the Bruins to the team title.

She was named the girls cross country athlete of the year by the Washington Post.

Murphy, who will continue her athletic career at track powerhouse Oregon, also is the reigning All-Met indoor and outdoor track athlete of the year.
