Lidl Plans Burke Store As Part Of Expansion

BURKE, VA — Lidl, a German grocery store chain with its U.S. headquarters based in Arlington, plans to open new Virginia stores by the end of 2021. The seven Virginia stores will include a Burke location on Old Keene Mill Road.

The future stores announced this week are part of a planned $500 million U.S. expansion, with a total of 50 new stores opening along the East Coast. Additional stores will be located in Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.

Lidl plans to invest more than $500 million into the new stores and hire a total of approximately 2,000 people. This month, Lidl was ranked the top retailer in the National Retail Federation's Hot 100 Retailers list of fastest-growing companies.

The Burke location at Rolling Valley Mall will replace the closed Shoppers store. The new stores will have grand opening dates that Lidl announced in the coming months. The next Northern Virginia location to open will be 6548 Little River Turnpike, Alexandria on Sept. 9. During the grand opening, the first 100 customers will receive a gift card valued between $5 and $100.

The other future Virginia locations will be on Gallows Road in Falls Church, Chantilly Crossing Lane in Chantilly, Twentyninth Place Court in Charlottesville, Liberia Avenue in Manassas, and Leesburg Pike in Sterling.

The German-based chain operates more than 11,000 stores in 32 countries, employing approximately 287,000 people globally. In June 2015, the company established U.S. headquarters in Arlington, Virginia and has stores in nine East Coast states. The company had originally planned to open 100 stores in the U.S. by mid-2018 but reached that goal this year.
