New Coronavirus Case Average Above 2,200 In Virginia, 600 in NoVA

The Virginia Department of Health recorded over 2,000 daily cases in six of the last seven days.

VIRGINIA — On Sunday, 2,117 additional coronavirus cases were reported by the Virginia Department of Health, and the seven-day average of daily cases reached a new high of 2,262.

There have been six out of seven days in the last week with cases above 2,000, although the 2,677 cases on Nov. 16 included a backlog from the weekend. Total cases per 100,000 people in the last 14 days are 300.8 across Virginia. The seven-day average of daily deaths reported is 20, and the seven-day average of deaths per 100,000 is 0.2. The seven-day average of new hospitalizations reported is 77, and the average of new hospitalizations per 100,000 is 0.9.

All regions are seeing upticks in daily cases. Northern Virginia's seven-day average of new cases increased from 240.9 a month ago on Oct. 22 to 603.9. By region, new cases include 530 in the northern region (603.9 seven-day average), 523 in the eastern region (395.4 seven-day average), 454 in the southwest region (578.9 seven-day average), 333 in the central region (329.4 seven-day average), and 277 in the northwest region (354.7 seven-day average).

While new cases are trending up, the seven-day average of tests performed has increased during November. As of Nov. 19, that average of daily testing numbers is 25,151, compared to 17,650 a month ago on Oct. 19. The seven-day average of positive PCR tests is 7.1 percent statewide. The southwest region's 10.3 percent average continues to lead the state, while other regional averages include 8.2 percent in the northern region, 6.8 percent in the eastern region, 5.7 percent in the northwest region and 5.3 percent in the central region.

Current hospitalizations stand at 1,469 statewide, and the seven-day average is 1,464.7. The current total includes 382 patients in the northern region, 321 in the southwest region, 290 in the central region, 257 in the eastern region, and 219 in the northwest region.

According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, the 1,469 current COVID-19 patients include 145 on ventilators and 320 in the intensive care units. Ventilator use among all hospital patients is at 65 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 73 percent.

There are no hospitals reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours. The last time PPE difficulties were reported was Sept. 18.

It's been one week since Gov. Ralph Northam's new restrictions took effect, which the governor hopes will keep the pandemic from getting worse in Virginia took effect statewide on Sunday, Nov. 15. The new restrictions include a 25-person limit on social gatherings both indoors and outdoors; a cutoff for alcohol sales, consumption and possession of alcohol after 10 p.m.; altered spectator limits at recreational sporting events, entertainment venues and racetracks; expansion of the mask mandate to cover residents ages 5 and up at indoor public places; and enforcement of guidelines that were previously considered best practices for essential businesses.

With Thanksgiving coming up this week, the Virginia Department of Health urges Virginians to avoid travel for Thanksgiving due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 in Virginia and the U.S. For those that do travel, the VDH recommends checking travel restrictions, getting a flu shot, wearing a mask in public places, maintaining six feet of distance from people outside your household and washing hands or using sanitizer.

  • Alexandria: 4,935 cases, 347 hospitalizations, 77 deaths; increase of 53 cases and one hospitalization

  • Fairfax County: 28,345 cases, 2,472 hospitalizations, 614 deaths; increase of 285 cases and two hospitalizations
  • Fairfax City: 201 cases, 17 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of four cases
