Paving And Restriping Changes Proposed In Burke Area
Transportation officials propose the addition of bike lanes on portions of roads.
WEST SPRINGFIELD, VA — A number of road configuration changes in the Burke and West Springfield areas are proposed as part of the 2021 Paving and Restriping Program by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
VDOT repaves hundreds of roads in Fairfax County each year. This program is done in collaboration with the Fairfax County Department of Transportation to implement parts of the county's comprehensive plan to improve traffic safety for different road users. Improvements added during repaving can include bike lanes, parking lanes, crosswalks and more. Paving work is expected to begin in April and finish in November.
Here are the proposed changes in the Burke and West Springfield areas:

Springfield District
- Bauer Drive from Old Keene Mill Road to Rolling Road, West Springfield: Bike lanes are proposed where space allows. All legal on-street parking will be maintained. The road currently has one lane in each direction, on-street parking, and turn lanes where the road meets the intersections.
- Hunter Village Drive between Old Keene Mill Road and north of Painted Daisy Drive, West Springfield: Bike lanes are proposed on existing shoulders where on-street parking is not needed. Slug parking will be maintained. The road currently has one lane in each direction, one bike lane on a portion of the road, and parking on some portions.
- Lee Chapel Road between Old Keene Mill Road and Fairfax County Parkway, Burke: Bike lanes are proposed by narrowing travel lanes. The road has two travel lanes in each direction and additional turn lanes at intersections.

- Commonwealth Boulevard from Guinea Road to Sideburn Road, Fairfax: An eastbound bike lane is proposed, and on-street parking would be maintained on both sides of the road. The road currently has one lane in each direction and parking on some parts.
No other roads will be added to the preliminary 2021 paving schedule. Exact start dates will be advertised 10 days before work starts. Work on neighborhood roads will typically happen between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., while overnight road work could occur for interstates and some primary routes.
VDOT and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation held a meeting on the proposed paving and restriping changes for the Braddock District on March 11. The meeting video and presentation are now available to view. Residents can provide comments online through March 25.
