WEST SPRINGFIELD, VA — On Friday, a portion of Rolling Road will have lane closures in West Springfield, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Lane closures will impact southbound Rolling Road between Old Keene Mill Road and Kenwood Avenue Friday, May 28 from 9 a.m. to noon. Crews will be implementing a traffic shift as part of the Rolling Road and Old Keene Mill Road intersection improvements. Work is weather dependent.

At least one lane of southbound Rolling Road will be open, and the northbound direction will remain open. Around noon Friday, southbound Rolling Road between Old Keene Mill Road and Kenwood Avenue will be shifted to the right onto new pavement. The traffic shift will allow for the median area to be reconstructed.

The Rolling Road and Old Keene Mill Road intersection improvements will also include adding a second left-turn lane from northbound Rolling Road to westbound Old Keene Mill Road, adding a dedicated right-turn lane from northbound Rolling Road to eastbound Old Keene Mill Road, upgrading the traffic signal, and improving the intersection alignment. Intersection improvements will be completed later in 2021, according to VDOT.

The second phase of the project will be a widening of Rolling Road from two to four lanes between Viola Street and Old Keene Mill Road. VDOT will also make traffic signal upgrades and create a shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists. The project seeks to relieve congestion, improve driver, bicyclist and pedestrian safety, and improve operations. Widening work is expected to begin in 2024.
