Even in the winter, you can practice good lawn care!
Even in the winter, you can practice good lawn care!

Even in the middle of a cold winter, there are things you can do to help your lawn stay healthy. In fact, taking the right steps now can ensure that your lawn comes back strong, green and gorgeous in the spring! Of course, as in many things with landscaping, what you do and what you don’t do are just as important. So take a look at these 4 winter lawn care tips and make sure your lawn is onboard. If you need any lawn care, landscaping or outdoor living help in the meantime, just contact AllGreen Landscape Co. for assistance: (703) 992-8787.

1. Keep Your Lawn Clean and Free of Debris

Make sure to remove any piles of leaves, lawn furniture, planters, branches, etc. from your lawn for the winter. Keep it clear so that it can have as much access to air and light as possible. Leaving things on the lawn for prolonged periods of time, especially over the winter, can cause dead spots, fungal infections and encourage rodents to move in on your space.

2. Re-seed with Cold-Weather Grass

Northern Virginia winters can be unpredictable. Sometimes we get snow, sometimes we don’t. You still have to look at your grass during the cold season, so why not make sure that your lawn looks as good as it can in the winter too? If you made sure to aerate and fertilize your lawn for one last time in the fall (a super thing to do for a great looking lawn), you can have AllGreen Landscaping Co. install a planting of a cold-weather-hardy grass seed. Fescue is one good example of this. Since the winter weather is usually wetter, this will give the seed a chance to take hold in the well-aerated and fertilized soil. That will help your lawn look great over future winters!

3. Don’t Get Snow-Melt or Salt on the Lawn

Most snow-melt chemicals and salt are not good for a healthy lawn, nor do they help the other plants in your landscaping design. If you need to use them, use them sparingly and be sure they won’t flow into the lawn once things melt. If you know that certain snow piles melt and flow into the lawn, use other things to improve traction on those walkways near the lawn. For example, sand can help improve your grip on icy walkways. If you have thick, clay-like soils, a little sand can also help boost drainage in those areas, so it’s a win-win for your landscaping too.

4. Try Not to Walk on the Lawn

When people walk on a frosted-over lawn, it can actually damage the blades. If people habitually beat a path to your door via the lawn, that’s sure to damage the grass in that area, which will require replanting in the spring. Encourage use of the correct walkways with inviting lighting. Keep your driveway clear so that you and your guests can park there and not on the grass too!
