5 Winter Yard Care Tips for Northern Virginia
5 Winter landscaping tasks to help your yard emerge beautifully in the spring: AllGreen Landscape Co. (703) 992-8787.

Winter is approaching. You can feel it in the air. Your yard has been put to bed for a long winter’s nap, but there are still some things you can do to ensure that it wakes up in a good mood when spring finally returns. Be sure to contact AllGreen Landscape Co. in Chantilly for help accomplishing these winter yard and lawn care tasks: (703) 992-8787.
1. Keep the Lawn Raked
Make sure to keep dead leaves raked off of the lawn so they don’t get wet, matted and rotten, which can encourage fungal disease to spread and ruin your lawn. For much of Northern Virginia, there still may be time to take care of these other late-fall lawn care tips as well, but once you’ve done all of that, make sure to just keep the lawn clear so it has as much access to fresh air and sunlight as possible.
2. Don’t Get Snow-Melt Chemicals on the Lawn
Whenever the snow hits, make sure that any snowmelt chemicals or rock salt you use on your walkways don’t get into the lawn or on your landscaping plants. You can minimize the need for snowmelt use by keeping the walks shoveled promptly. And clean, un-chemical-loaded snow can actually insulate plants from very cold temperatures. If the weather turns icy, try using sand instead, as it can help with traction and actually improve the drainage and texture for clay-based soils.

3. Make a Spring Landscaping Wishlist
Get out your plant catalogs, check your Pinterest boards and peruse the online plant databases. We love to do this in the winter. Make a wish list, but don’t spend a bunch of money before you do the proper homework on what plants work well in Northern Virginia and what plants don’t get along with each other, or your pets, or that are prone to disease. Try to use plants native to our area, as they are hardier, need less water and are more disease resistant. If you have questions about different plant varieties in our area, just let us know and we’ll be happy to discuss it with you: (703) 992-8787.
4. Plan Ahead with Average Frost Dates
We completely understand the temptation many homeowners have of running out to plant new things in the yard when April hits. But here in Chantilly, it’s not at all unusual to get a hard frost sometime that month that might damage or even kill new plants. Shoot for adding new plants around mid-May instead.
