If you thought your lawn didn’t need any TLC over the winter—especially the crazy winter we’ve had here in Northern Virginia so far—then read on! Doing these 7 things to your lawn in the late fall and throughout the winter can impact how fresh and green your lawn will look in spring! So, contact AllGreen Landscape Co. to schedule some winter lawn help: (703) 992-8787.
1. The Last Mow in the Fall
Hopefully you did this already, but later in the fall, your Chantilly lawn care company should stop by to cut your lawn nice and short for the winter. This improves air circulation to the soil and reduces the chances of mold, fungus and pests taking up residence over the winter.
2. Keep it Clean and Unburdened
Remove everything from the lawn: patio furniture, kiddie pools, statuettes, bird baths, fallen branches or leaves, planters, etc. This will also prevent unwanted mold, mildew and potentially inviting rodent nesting sites.

3. Fall Aeration is Critical
If you didn’t have your lawn care company do this last fall, make sure it happens next fall: aeration. This loosens compact soil, allowing water, nutrients and fresh air to access and nurture your lawn’s root systems so it comes back stronger in the spring.
4. Post Aeration Fall Fertilization
Shortly after aerating the lawn, you should fertilize it. That way, the nutrients penetrate more deeply to the turf roots.

5. Try a Cold Weather Seeding
AllGreen Landscaping Co. can help you keep a healthy-looking lawn all winter by laying down some cold-weather-friendly grass seed varieties that look great during those times when snow isn’t covering the lawn.
6. Keep Snow-Melt off the Grass
Most snow-melt chemicals, including salt, do no favors for your lawn or other landscaping plants, so avoid shoveling or snow-blowing contaminated snow onto the lawn. Instead, try sand (which can loosen clay-ish soils nicely) for better traction and clear walkways quickly.
7. Don’t Walk on the Lawn
Whenever the weather is cold, frosty or snowy, try to avoid regular foot traffic over grassy areas and don’t leave heavy objects or parked vehicles there. This will damage and kill grass that will have to be fixed come spring.
