How Should I Overseed My Lawn?
Overseeding your lawn can improve growth, greenery and lawn lushness in the spring. AllGreen Landscape Co.: (703) 992-8787

Overseeding your lawn is a good way to improve lawn health and strength, particularly if you have a very “busy” lawn with kids, pets and entertainment rolling over it during the warmer parts of the year. If you notice this kind of activity leaves bare or damaged lawn spots, contact AllGreen Landscape Co. at (703) 992-8787 and we can help you prepare, overseed, fertilize and adjust sprinkler water levels to get the right results for a lush, healthy lawn this year. Here’s our 5-step lawn overseeding process:
1. Overseeding Preparations
Before overseeding, it’s important to mow the lawn on your mower’s lowest setting. Make sure to bag the clippings so they don’t cover any of the soil. Then rake to remove any other debris, weeds or dead grass. This loosens the soil and allows the seeds, water and sunlight to get to the soil to spur excellent growth. This can be a time consuming process, so if you don’t have time, our The next part requires seed spreader, but if you don’t have one, again, you can just contact AllGreen Landscape Co. to have us do it. We can evaluate your lawn and make sure to use a seed compatible with your current lawn and also select the right fertilizer for your soil type and grass species. We also use a soil enhancer in the mix to prime the soil to create the best possible growing conditions for the new seeds, as well as strengthening your older grass blades.
3. Adjust Watering Levels
It’s important to keep your lawn properly moist during the next two weeks. If it’s too wet, the seeds won’t sprout properly and molds and diseases can develop. If it’s not wet enough, the seeds also won’t be able to get root into the soil. We can help you set the sprinklers to the right timing for the right water levels for optimal lawn growth.

4. Keep off the Lawn
Make sure to limit activity on the lawn for the next few weeks to prevent stress and allow the seeds to grow unhindered. Keep pets and people off the lawn until the new grass has reached a good “mowing level”. Once the blades are long enough to mow, the lawn can tolerate light activity again.
5. When to Overseed Your Lawn
Here in Chantilly, lawn overseeding depends on the type of grass in your yard. If your lawn is a warm-weather species, overseeding in late spring or early summer is a great idea. If you have a cool-weather grass species, then fall or early spring is the best time to overseed.
