Voters in Virginia's 33rd Senate District will head to the polls Jan. 21 to elect a new senator for the General Assembly. Democrat Jennifer Wexton, Republican John Whitbeck and Republican-turned-Independent Joe May will face off on that date to replace Mark Herring, who was elected Virginia Attorney General. Gov. Bob McDonnell announced the election date just as many were taking time off for the holidays. May decided to <a href="https://ashburn.patch.com/groups/elections/p/joe-may-enters-33rd-senate-district-race-gop-to-hold-mass-meeting">run as an Independent hours after launching a campaign as a Republican; the switch was in response to the party deciding after his announcement to hold a Mass Meeting</a> rather than a primary.
