The Virginia Department of Transportation will open a third lane of westbound Route 50 Dec. 18, causing minor traffic shifts.

The Virginia Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that a third lane of westbound Route 50 will open Thursday, Dec. 18 from Stonecroft Boulevard in Fairfax County to Pleasant Valley Road in Loudoun County.

Lanes will be temporarily closed between 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18 and 5:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19 in order to complete the traffic shift.

The opening of the new lane means drivers will have three westbound lanes through the Virginia Department of Transportation’s entire Route 50 widening project, which stretches from Route 28 in Fairfax to Poland Road in Loudoun.
