Northern Virginia Weather: Dreary Start to Tuesday

STERLING, VA — Here comes the rain, folks. That's the word from the are arm of the National Weather Service.

Monday night's rain is expected to linger into Tuesday, after which a respite will arrive.

That would be a mostly clear and warm Wednesday, which arrives following a 24-hour span of high winds and scant sun.

Here's the latest NWS area forecast:

Tonight: Rain before 2am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 2am and 5am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5am. Low around 56. South wind 13 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday: A chance of showers, mainly before 8am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 78. West wind 11 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 50. West wind 8 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 70. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable.

Wednesday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Thursday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 66. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 57.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 38.
