Billy Elliot Regional Premiere at West Potomac High School
West Potomac High School continues its Season: Beyond the Silver Screen with Billy Elliot the Musical, an inspiring song and dance musical!

Billy Elliot the Musical
Following hit productions of School of Rock - The Musical in the fall of 2016 and Night of the Living Dead
in winter 2017, Beyond the Page Theatre Company (BTPTC) at West Potomac High School continues
it's 32nd Season: Beyond the Silver Screen with Billy Elliot the Musical, an inspiring song and dance
musical for the whole family!
Based on the 2000 film Billy Elliot, this musical with music by Elton John, and book and lyrics by Lee
Hall, is the story of Billy, a despondent, motherless young boy who trades boxing gloves for ballet shoes.
His personal struggles play out against a heart-breaking, working-class family story and community strife
and violence caused by the UK miners' strike (1984–1985) in County Durham, England. Hall's
screenplay was also inspired in part by A. J. Cronin's 1935 novel, The Stars Look Down, about another
miners' strike in pre-World War England, to which the musical's opening song pays homage.
Billy Elliot the Musical premiered in London in 2005, and opened on Broadway in 2008 where it ran
through 2012. There were also limited North American national tours from 2010 until 2013. Additional
international productions have been performed since, and in May 2016, the Grandstreet Theatre in
Helena, Mont., became the first American, nonprofessional theatre company to stage the musical. The
BTPTC production will be a regional premiere of the show and will feature West Potomac High School
student, Natalie Edwards, who was a cast member of the national tour.
For those interested in a true behind the scenes experience, the cast and crew will hold a special Billy
Elliot Dance Camp on Saturday, March 18, where campers will learn songs & choreography from the
show and later perform after the April 29th matinee show. The camp is open to students grades 3-8 and
the cost is $50 per student, with a multi-sibling discount. Advance registration is required. Registration
and additional information on the camp can be found online at www.westpotomactheatre.org. This will
likely be a very popular camp! Spaces are limited, so register today online!
As another way of involving audiences, there will be Talk Back opportunities with the cast following the
Thursday performances on April 27 and May 6. Additionally, as a community philanthropic effort, the
theatre company will be collecting gently used dance shoes throughout the run of the production to
donate to the dance programs of Sitar Arts Center in Washington DC, an organization that provides a
safe haven to more than 800 students a year, 80 percent of whom come from low-income households.
Assigned seating for all shows is $12 for students; $15 for adults, and is available online until 2 hours
before each performance. Any remaining seats, as well as general admission seating, will be available
at the door one hour before performances. We recommend purchasing tickets online ahead of time.
