DC's coolest running routes range from jogging along the National Mall to running a segment of the 184 mile Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Trail.

When you think of Washington, DC, your mind probably doesn’t immediately jump to the running potential in the area. As an urban area with a population of of almost 700,000, the DC area’s jungle of buildings, pavement, and traffic seems less than ideal when it comes to spending time outdoors. But, before you count the area out, the prospect of going for a run in DC may seem better once you realize the extent of the DC area’s trail network.

DC’s coolest routes range from running at the National Mall to running a segment of the 184 mile Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Trail; 25 national parks provide a great platform for those looking to get some exercise, or just get outside. DC’s expansive metro system makes getting to the trailhead of your choice is as easy as hopping on the next train -- In fact, the practice is common enough that there are websites to help locate top 10 metro accessible DC trails. Western Ridge Trail in Rock Creek Park


A great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, the Western Ridge trail runs for about 5mi, but offers plenty of smaller trails off of the main trail for those looking to up the distance. Often overlooked, the Western Ridge Trail is much less travelled than the main paved Rock Creek Trail, a popular running option.


Roosevelt Island


Also easily accessible by metro, Roosevelt Island is a great place to put together a shorter running route. The Swamp Trail is your best bet - a 1.5 mi course around the perimeter of the island gives you great views and some seclusion from the city.

Custis Trail


A 4 mile route, the Custis Trail is paved and divided by a yellow line, helping keep users safe. The trail also offers several connections, including the 18mi Mount Vernon Trail, and sits very close to Roosevelt Island.

When you pair DC’s trail network with its metro lines, you have an easy and efficient way to get to plenty of running destinations, even from the heart of the city. So, before you write DC off, take a look at the top 10 and see what DC can offer you.
