ALEXANDRIA, VA — As Alexandria City Public Schools considers options for reopening schools in the fall, families are asked to complete a survey by July 12.

The school district is looking at two scenarios: a full-time virtual model or hybrid model with in-person and virtual instruction. Virtual instruction would include live online classes and activities with teachers as well as independent activities. This model would be refined based on feedback on the virtual learning between March and June.

The in-person instruction would adhere to social distancing and gathering guidelines. Students would not be in school buildings every day of the week.

Parents are asked to select one of the models, and name deciding factors in their choice. They will also share feelings on face masks, temperature checks, limited classroom seating, meals in classrooms, and more.

The school district says the survey will show the likelihood that students and staff will return for the new academic year. The estimates will help school officials develop reopening plans in addition to public health guidelines.

Families will be asked to make a decision about returning to school in late July once ACPS presents reopening plans. The first day of school is scheduled to be Sept. 8.

Other Northern Virginia school districts, including Fairfax County, Loudoun County and Arlington County, have selected hybrid models. Students would get in-person and virtual instruction, although families are given the option to opt out for full-time virtual instruction.
