Alexandria Animal Shelter Pauses Adoptions Due To Coronavirus
Staff are available for urgent services, and residents are asked to delay surrendering pets if possible.
ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, which runs the city's animal shelter, temporarily suspended adoptions starting Thursday, March 26. The decision aims at limiting the number of people in the facility amid concerns about the new coronavirus in the city.
"This is a difficult decision for us to make, but we feel our highest duty is to our community, and at this time, limiting person-to-person contact has shown to be the best way to prevent the spread of this virus," says Stella Hanly, executive director of AWLA.
Staff will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for urgent community needs, including found animals, Pet Pantry requests or emergency pet surrenders. Residents should make appointments by emailing info@alexandriaanimals.org, and appointments by phone are not available at this time.
