Alexandria Government Open, Winter Weather Advisory Continues

City government is open on Feb. 1, although unscheduled leave is an option for non-emergency personnel.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — After Sunday's winter storm left hazardous conditions in Alexandria, city government will open on Monday.

City government facilities and courts are operating on normal schedules on Feb. 1, but non-emergency personnel can take unscheduled leave with supervisor approval. Employees under telework agreements can use unscheduled telework with supervisor approval.

For Alexandria City Public Schools, buildings and grounds are closed on Monday and Tuesday. Virtual learning will continue as scheduled. Food distribution will not be provided on Tuesday.

Alexandria and the region remain under a winter weather advisory through the rest of Monday. The National Weather Service says snow and freezing rain are likely, possibly with sleet, before noon. Snow with possible freezing rain is forecasted from noon to 1 p.m., then snow will continue after 1 p.m. The change of precipitation is 70 percent, and the NWS expects daytime snowt and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch.

On Monday night, snow is likely before 8 p.m., changing to a chance of snow and freezing rain from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and chance of snow after 11 p.m. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible at night.

City crews continued to treat roads overnight into Monday. Hazardous conditions could continue for the morning and evening commutes. Drivers and pedestrians are urged to use caution on the roads.
