Alexandria Kinderchoir's Lantern Night Returns For Fifth Year

ALEXANDRIA, VA — When daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, days will become noticeably shorter. That's one reason why Alexandria Kinderchoir holds Lantern Night. The fifth annual event will happen Thursday, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. at Convergence, 1801 North Quaker Lane, Alexandria.

All are welcome to the performance by the Alexandria Kinderchoir, the city's only community children's choir. Guests can bring handmade lanterns for the performance before a sing-a-long and circle dancing under the stars. Cookies will be provided at the event.

According to Alexandria Kinderchoir, the event originated as the Del Ray Lantern Walk in 2014 "as a way of bringing warmth and light into the night as we move towards the darkest days of the year." The event will collect donations for the Center for Alexandria's Children, a nonprofit supporting young victims of abuse. Lantern Night is held in collaboration with Convergence, UpCycle, Great Harvest Bread Company, and Trader Joe’s.

If you'd like to make a lantern before the event, UpCycle will host workshops on Wednesday, Oct. 30, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $5 and includes all supplies. UpCycle is located in the Durant Center at 1605 Cameron Street.

Earlier this year, Alexandria Kinderchoir from Del Ray United Methodist Church to Convergence for additional space. Formerly known as Del Ray Kinderchoir, the group aims to provide a noncompetitive atmosphere for children to develop their love for singing. It serves kindergarten to seventh grade.
