Alexandria Man To Serve 66 Years For Grandfather's Killing
The man broke into his grandfather's home and shot him while he was in bed, according to prosecutors.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—An Alexandria man was sentenced to 66 years and six months in prison Thursday for the murder of his grandfather. Dallas Jermaine Smith, 32, was previously convicted on first degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of murder charges tied to the death of his grandfather, Jerry Scott, 84.
Prosecutors say Smith broke into Scott's home on East Reed Avenue on July 22, 2018. Smith found Scott in bed and fired six shots at him. Three of them struck Scott. Smith then attacked Scott with a bladed weapon, causing significant upper body injuries. Scott died of his injuries soon afterward.
Scott's daughter, who is Smith's aunt, discovered her father's body the following day. A few days later, police identified Smith as the suspect and charged with the killing last fall. Investigations revealed Smith was angry at Scott for evicting him from the home a month earlier. The two had previously lived together.

As a convicted felon, Smith could not legally purchase a gun since 2009. Prosecutors believe he bought pieces of a 9mm semi-automatic pistol on the internet and assembled the gun.
Smith was sentenced to 103 years in prison with everything but the 66 and a half years suspended. He will be on supervised probation for the rest of his life and was ordered to pay restitution for Scott's funeral.
