ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City of Alexandria announced enforcement of parking restrictions suspended due to the pandemic will return on Monday, July 20. That includes time restrictions for the public in residential parking zones and the 72-hour limit for parking a vehicle in one spot.

Enforcement had been suspended in March to accommodate residents staying home during the pandemic, as well as those caring for others and delivering goods and services. Temporary curbside pickup zones will remain in place.

"As Virginia continues to reopen and state COVID-19 related restrictions are being lifted, the City has determined that it is now appropriate to resume normal parking enforcement," read a city news release.

The following restrictions will be enforced starting on July 20:

  • Time restrictions for the general public in residential parking permit zones (signs in these zones include the language “residential permit exempt”).
  • Saturday time restrictions and meter fees on blocks with pay stations (time restrictions and meter fees on blocks with pay stations will continue to be enforced on weekdays).
  • Time restrictions for street sweeping (signs pertaining to these restrictions prohibit parking during a one-hour window on a particular day of the week).
  • The prohibition against parking on the street for more than 72 hours.
  • The requirement to display a valid state inspection sticker.

Residents who are unable to move their vehicles in adherence to the 72-hour rule are asked to apply for an exemption. Exemptions are valid for two weeks and can be requested five times per calendar year.

Alexandria and the rest of Virginia are in phase three of the governor's Forward Virginia reopening plan. That has allowed restaurants and nonessential retail to operate at full capacity while maintaining social distancing and other requirements.
