Alexandria Seminary to Hold Christian Rock Concert

The Virginia Theological Seminary will hold a Christian rock concert April 13 on its campus, located at 3737 Seminary Rd.

The seminary’s Rev. J. Barney Hawkins told members of the Seminary Hill Association Thursday evening that concert attendance will be capped at 2,000 people. The alcohol-free event will begin at 9 a.m. and last until 10 p.m.

The day will feature artists including Five Iron Frenzy, the Letter Black, Fran McKendree, the Sloan River Project and Joel Joa.

Hawkins said the seminary has filed for all necessary permits and that Alexandria police will help guide traffic.

The seminary currently has 161 students, some of whom decided to study at the seminary after listening to Christian music, Hawkins said. “We’re trying to find ways to touch more people,” he said. “... A lot of people are looking for different ways of worshipping and music, especially as our student body gets younger.”

Doors open at 8 a.m. The day will begin with a Quidditch clinic and tournament at 9 a.m. and will include poetry, spoken word performances, opportunities to meet musicians and food vendors all day. Most activity and bands will be in middle part of campus, called the Grove.

“I think it’s going to be a wonderful day and a lot of fun,” Hawkins said.
