Celebrate Alexandria's Diversity, Michael Winslow, Caught in the Net and Bargains for Brides

There are plenty of festivals this weekend and a chance to tour Mount Vernon with your pup. If you're planning a wedding, stop by the Nationwide Tour of Gowns in Dupont Circle sponsored by Brides Against Breast Cancer. 

Some events for your weekend in and around Del Ray and Alexandria:

The City of Alexandria is hosting the second annual DiverseCity Alexandria Multicultural Fest from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Four Mile Run Park Community Building, 4109 Mt. Vernon Ave. Admission is free. 

Michael Winslow, the “Man of 10,000 Sound Effects” and—in all truth—the best thing about the “Police Academy” movies, will be at the Old Town Theater (815 ½ King St.) for a series of shows Friday and Saturday. Tickets start at $25. More information available at the Old Town Theater website.  

You can catch performances of “Caught in the Net,” a new play from the Little Theatre of Alexandria, throughout the weekend. A sequel to 2005 sellout “Run for you Wife!,” this new play follows John Smith, a London taxi driver with two wives in different parts of the city and a tight schedule to keep. One Percent art exhibit is now showing at Del Ray Artisans (2704 Mount Vernon Ave.). The art exhibit shows works inspired by asking artists to share the 1 percent in their world as inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and its look at the wealthy 1 percent. The exhibit runs through Sept. 29. More information at the Del Ray Artisans website.

Learn more about Samuel Tucker during a book signing and reception for the first children’s biography about the Virginia civil rights trailblazer by Nancy Noyes Silcox. Remarks will be made by Sen. Henry Marsh III, the late Tucker’s law partner. Family friendly and free! The event runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Alexandria Black History Museum (902 Wythe St.). The O Street Band performs from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday at Alexandria’s Four Mile Run Farmers and Artisans Market. Free!

The Taste will be serving up some modern and slightly classic rock covers beginning at 10 p.m. Saturday at The Light Horse (715 King St.). No cover.

Catch The Derds, a collection of Del Ray dads playing classic rock tunes, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub (2300 Mount Vernon Ave.). Free show!

Saturdays through Oct. 26 take the All the Presidents’ Pups walking tour of Mount Vernon. President George Washington loved dogs and you’ll hear all about it during a 1.25-mile walk with five stops. The tour begins at 10 a.m. The cost is general admission - $17 for adults - plus $5 for the tour. Free for dogs. 

Brides Against Breast Cancer is a national nonprofit touring the country selling donated wedding gowns with the proceeds directly going toward programs and services for people who are impacted by cancer. The "Nationwide Tour of Gowns" will make a tour stop in Washington on Friday and Saturday at the Dupont Circle Hotel, 1500 New Hampshire Ave.

Music, firing demonstrations and hikes are just some of the ways to commemorate the 151st anniversary of the Battle of Antietam at Antietam National Battlefield, 5831 Dunker Church Rd., Sharpsburg, Md. The event runs Friday through Sunday and costs $4 per person or $6 per family. Call 301-432-5125 for more information.
