Flash Flood Warning Issued For Some Areas Of NoVA, DC

ALEXANDRIA, VA — As rain impacts the region throughout the day on Thursday, some areas may see a greater impact than others. A few parts of Northern Virginia and DC are under a flash flood warning, while other parts have a flash flood watch.

According to the National Weather Service, the flash flood warning runs through 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the District of Columbia, southeastern Arlington County, southeastern Fairfax County, and the City of Alexandria. Forecasters say thunderstorms producing heavy rain were detected by Doppler radar around 1:28 p.m. At least 0.5 to 1.5 inches have fallen, and flash flooding could begin or be ongoing.

Areas to watch for flooding include small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, drainage areas and low-lying areas.

The flash flood watch applies to Arlington County, Falls Church, Alexandria, Fairfax, King George County, Prince William County, Manassas, Manassas Park, Spotsylvania County and Stafford County until 8 p.m. Forecasters expect thunderstorms to cause heavy rain, especially near and along the Interstate 95 corridor. Expected rainfall totals are 1 to 3 inches, but higher localized amounts are possible.

A flash flood warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring, and residents along creeks and streams should act to protect life and property. A flash flood watch means conditions may develop to lead to flash flooding.

In Alexandria, a resident observed water beginning to accumulate on the street. Ashby Street was one of the locations in the city that experienced flash flooding during a significant rain event on July 23.
