Fourth Of July 2019: What's Open, Closed In Alexandria

A few services will be closed Fourth of July through the rest of the week.

As families around the region celebrate Fourth of July with fireworks and cookouts, many services will take a holiday break. With Fourth of July falling on a Thursday this year, some services will be closed Friday as well.

City of Alexandria government offices and libraries will be closed on Thursday, July 4 while transit and a few museums and recreation centers are open.

Here are the openings/closings to know around Independence Day in Alexandria:

City of Alexandria government offices: Closed on July 4.

Animal shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be closed on Thursday, July 4. If you have an animal emergency, call Alexandria Police at 703-746-4444.

DASH Bus and King Street Trolley: DASH Bus will operate on a Sunday schedule on July 4. The free King Street Trolley will operate every 10 to 15 minutes between the King Street-Old Town Metro Station and the waterfront from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. For more information, visit dashbus.com.

Health facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King Street), the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard Street) and the Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King Street) will be closed on July 4-5.

Historic sites and museums: The Lyceum and Fort Ward Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Gadsby's Tavern Museum, the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum and the Historic Alexandria Store will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All other Office of Historic Alexandria museums will be closed on July 4. Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 703-746-5778; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound lot: The City's Impound Facility (5249 Eisenhower Avenue) will be closed on July 4.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches and the Alexandria Law Library (520 King Street) will be closed on July 4.

Metrorail: Metrorail will run on a special schedule on July 4 from 7 a.m.-11:30 p.m. Off-peak fares will be in effect and parking will be free at Metro lots and garages. Metro's summer shutdown of six Yellow and Blue stations south of Reagan National Airport continues. Metro and DASH are providing shuttle buses every 10 to 15 minutes at impacted stations. Metrobus: Metrobus will operate on a Saturday schedule on July 4. Visit www.wmata.com for more details on specific routes.

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with posted parking time limits, on July 4. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no-parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on July 4.

Pools: Outdoor pools will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. on July 4.

Post offices: Closed on July 4.

Recreation and arts centers: The Chinquapin Park Recreation Center & Aquatics Facility will be open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Charles Houston and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 4. The Torpedo Factory Art Center and all other recreation and arts centers will be closed on July 4.

State offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk's Office, the Alexandria Circuit Court, the Alexandria General District Court, the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and the Court Service Unit located in the Alexandria Courthouse (520 King Street) will be closed on July 4-5. The Department of Motor Vehicles at 2681 Mill Rd. will be closed on July 4.

Trash and recycling pickup: Residential refuse and recycling will not be collected on July 4. Collection service Monday, July 1, through Wednesday, July 3, will be picked up as normal; Thursday's collection will take place on Friday, July 5.

Virginia Railway Express: VRE does not operate on July 4. For more information, visit www.vre.org.
