Harris Teeter Files $1M Suit Against Arlington County

Harris Teeter is suing Arlington County for the sewage backup that forced the closure of its grocery store located just north of Del Ray and Arlandria at 3600 S. Glebe Rd., according to WJLA. 

The grocery store has remained closed since May 2012 following an interior flood caused by the backup.

In documents filed Sept. 17, the insurers representing Harris Teeter—which was recently purchased by Kroger—say Arlington’s failure to monitor and maintain its nearby water treatment plant caused the sewage backup. The suit also claims the county ignored warnings and problems with equipment.  

Harris Teeter is seeking more than $1 million in damages.

According to a March release from the company’s Charlotte, N.C. headquarters, the location is currently undergoing a complete renovation with a new floor plan and equipment. The store is expect to reopen Oct. 23.

In Alexandria, a new Harris Teeter is expected to open in late summer or early fall 2014 at The Kingsley Apartments in North Old Town.
