Beautifying Alexandria — The city’s Beautification Commission hands out its annual awards recognizing residents, businesses and public-sector efforts to contribute to the beautification of their neighborhoods and public vistas with a ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30 at the Little Theatre of Alexandria (600 Wolfe St.).
Hitchcock at Duncan — The Friends of Duncan Library present their latest screening of an Alfred Hitchcock classic at 6:30 p.m. at the branch (2501 Commonwealth Ave.). Because of licensing restrictions, the name of the film cannot be used to promote the event. But we’ve heard this one includes a famous scene involving a tennis match. Free Yoga — Stop by 1900 Mount Vernon Ave. at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 for a free, hour-long yoga class presented by Presada Yoga. Classes will be held each Wednesday in October. More information in this Del Ray Patch event listing.
“Closer to Free” — The BoDeans take the stage at the Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave.) at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2. You might me familiar with this Waukesha, Wis. band’s 1996 hit that prominently features an accordion. Clarence Bucaro opens. Tickets are $29.50. More information on the Birchmere website.

Planning Commission — Alexandria’s influential Planning Commission, which makes recommendations to City Council on special use permits, requests for vacations or encroachments of public right-of-ways, rezonings, master plan amendments and other requests, meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2 at City Hall (301 King St.). The commission will consider applications to redevelop the Afghan Restaurant on Route 1 and the Travelodge on N. Washington Street as well as a request to add lights to the dog park at Simpson Stadium Park. Check out the meeting’s docket on the city’s website.
