Meeting On Del Ray Gateway Project To Inform Project Design

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria's Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities is launching the design process for the Del Ray Gateway Project, which will replace the closed Colasanto Pool in Del Ray.

The Del Ray Gateway community partnership is collaborating with the city to redevelop the triangle park at Mount Vernon and Commonwealth Avenues. The design project will focus on redesigning Colasanto Pool, which has been closed since 2010. A 2012 aquatics facilities study recommended that the old pool become a spray park.

A design team led by LSG Landscape Architecture has been selected through a procurement process that ended in 2020. The city is providing funding for design and construction through its Capital Improvement Program and a Community Matching Fund along with the Del Ray Gateway team.

Future projects adding to the park will include a memorial garden named for the late Nancy Dunning, who is credited with creating a vision for what is now a Mount Vernon Avenue filled with businesses.

Residents will be asked to provide input on the project at a virtual meeting at 7 p.m. on March 4. Input will be used to guide the project, which will go through a community design process.

The city's estimated completion date for design is the end of 2021. Construction is expected to start in 2022.
