Meeting To Detail Upgrades To Mount Vernon Avenue Transit Stops

ALEXANDRIA, VA—A community meeting will detail upcoming improvements to make 11 locations ADA-compliant along Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray. The meeting will be held Wednesday, June 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Avenue, Alexandria.

The improvements will happen at transit stops and other locations on Mount Vernon Avenue between West Reed Avenue and East Nelson Avenue. New curb extensions for bus stops, updates to existing bus pads and curb ramps, relocation of bus stop signs and benches, and installation of a storm inlet, sewer and manholes are all part of the project.

The approximate locations of the improvements are as follows (see maps below):

• Mount Vernon Avenue near Reed Avenue, curb extensions
• Mount Vernon Avenue near Mt. Ida and Uhler Avenues (two sides), curb extensions
• Mount Vernon Avenue near Oxford Avenue, curb extension
• Mount Vernon Avenue near Custis Avenue, curb extension
• Mount Vernon Avenue near Windsor Avenue, parking removal for transit stop
• Mount Vernon Avenue near Bellefonte Avenue, curb extension
• Mount Vernon Avenue near Bellefonte Avenue, parking removal for transit stop
• Mount Vernon Avenue near Nelson Avenue (two sides), parking removal for transit stop

The project is part of the Mount Vernon Avenue Complete Streets project. Construction of the improvements is set to begin over the summer. Mount Vernon Avenue is also scheduled for resurfacing between Braddock Road and Hume Avenue.
