Mind the Mat Hosting Yoga Class Benefitting GW Chamber Orchestra

Alexandria middle school orchestra seeking funds for spring trip to New York.

The orchestra will be on hand for Sunday’s 45-minute class playing holiday carols and seeking donations for an April trip to New York City.

“It would mean a ton to these kids if we had a big turnout from the community,” Mind the Mat owner Megan Brown said. “It will also be an amazing experience to practice yoga with a mini live orchestra.”

During the orchestra’s three-day trip, members will receive a tour of Carnegie Hall, meet with members of the New York Philharmonic and participate in a workshop. The GW chamber orchestra has won state awards and competed in national competitions. The group has also performed at the Kennedy Center.

The cost for each member of the orchestra to attend the trip will be about $550. Some students can afford to pay. But for others, it’s too much.

The students have played a variety of sites around the city to raise funds, including farmers markets, outside local businesses and even at Metro stations in the morning before school.

Those who wish to make a tax-deductible donation to the orchestra can make it payable to “George Washington Middle School” to the attention of: Orchestra Director Jonathan Jones, George Washington Middle School, 1005 Mt. Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22301.

Mind the Mat is located at 2214 Mount Vernon Ave.

More information about the class is available on Mind the Mat’s website.
