Officer Accidentally Fires Gun In Del Ray School: Police

A school resource officer on Tuesday morning accidentally fired his weapon at George Washington Middle School, say Alexandria police.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A police officer assigned to a Del Ray school accidentally fired his gun Tuesday morning, and the Alexandria Police Department is investigating the incident. There were no injuries reported, and all classes at the school are continuing as normal, the police department said.

The incident occurred at about 9:10 a.m. at George Washington Middle School, when the school resource officer "accidentally discharged his service weapon inside his office" at the school, the police said in a statement.

The officer checked for potential injuries in the area and contacted his supervisor and school staff. The students and staff are safe, the police said.

Alexandria police officers carry .40-caliber Glock semi-automatic pistols, said Crystal Nosal, a police spokeswoman. She said the department will not release the officer's name at this time.

The school resource officer is a five-year veteran of the force. He's been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The school is at 1005 Mount Vernon Ave. in the Del Ray neighborhood, near the Braddock Road Metro station.
