Phone Scam Prompts Warning For Alexandria Residents
The Alexandria Sheriff's Office warns of a scam involving a caller threatening arrest if the victim does not pay.
ALEXANDRIA, VA—Officials are warning about a scam involving callers threatening arrest, falsely claiming to be from the Alexandria Sheriff's Department. The sheriff's department says the phone scam is targeting Virginia residents.
The scam callers will ask for payment of fees or overdue fines to nullify an arrest warrent. Aside from demanding payment and threatening arrest, the callers will try to obtain personal information, credit card information or bank account details. In some cases, victims are asked for money through digital transfers or payment apps.
Anyone who receives a call should immediately hang up. Residents should not answer a scam caller's questions or provide personal information, even if the caller threatens arrest.

The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office says it does not make these calls and does not ask for payment over the phone. If you are unsure if a sheriff's deputy contacted you, call 703-746-4114.
