Police: No Charges for Driver in Child’s Death

Alexandria police say charges will not be filed against the driver of a SUV who struck and killed a 4-year-old boy Saturday in West End Alexandria.

Police spokeswoman Ashley Hildebrandt said Monday that she could not release the speed of the vehicle at the time of the collision, which also injured the boy’s mother, saying it was under investigation. The speed limit in the area where the crash occurred, in the 6300 block of Stevenson Avenue, is 35 mph.

“It just looks like a horrible and unfortunate accident,” Hildebrandt said.

The 84-year-old driver, whose name has not been released, remained on the scene of the crash, police said Saturday.

The boy and his mother were walking along Stevenson Avenue when the boy suddenly ran across the street and into the path of the man driving the Jeep Commander. The mother ran after her son and was also struck.

The boy was pronounced dead at Inova Fairfax Hospital. The mother sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the same hospital, but Hildebrandt did not know if she had been released Monday.

Police are not yet releasing the child’s name, saying he is a juvenile and that all family members need to be notified. The police department is also not releasing the area where the mother and son lived, but Hildebrandt did say they had family in the area.

There is no crosswalk near where the boy ran into the street, she said.
