ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will present three possible design concepts for the spray park at the former Colasanto Pool location.

The Del Ray Gateway community partnership is collaborating with the city to redevelop the triangle park at Mount Vernon and Commonwealth Avenues. This particular project focuses on redesigning Colasanto Pool as a spray park. Colasanto Pool has been closed since 2010, and a 2012 aquatics facilities study recommended that the old pool become a spray park.

The spray park is in the planning and design phase. LSG Landscape Architects, the design team selected by the city, has created the three potential design concepts following a March community meeting to determine design principles.

Another virtual community meeting will be held on Thursday, May 13 at 7 p.m. to receive input on the design concepts. Feedback from the meeting will be used to select a design concept for the project. The project will then go through a community design process.

Future projects for the Del Ray Gateway Project will focus on other parts of the park, including a memorial garden named for the late Nancy Dunning. Dunning, a homicide victim who died in 2003, is remembered for her vision of what is now a Mount Vernon Avenue filled with businesses.
