Safety Improvements Coming to Mt. Vernon Avenue and Glebe Road Intersection

Improvements coming to intersection where local resident was hit, killed in December in Del Ray area.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The City of Alexandria Department of Transportation & Environmental Services is making changes to the intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and Glebe Road beginning in January 2017.

A local resident, Rosemarie Cruz, 49, died Dec. 4 after she was hit at the intersection.

Here are some of the safety measures underway, according to the City:

The goals of the project are the following:

  • Improve the safety of pedestrians crossing Mount Vernon Avenue
  • Improve the visibility of pedestrians at all crossings.
  • Reduce conflicting turning movements between all roadway users.

The following changes are being implemented:

  • Upgrade the lighting at and near intersection
  • Install Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) for crosswalks on Mount Vernon Avenue at Glebe Road
  • Post No Turn on Red signs on Glebe Road for east and west approaches at intersection with Mount Vernon Avenue
  • Install right turn arrow for eastbound Glebe Road right turn onto Mount Vernon Avenue
  • Convert westbound Glebe Road left turn to a protected left turn only

Section 10-2-24 of the City Code allows the Director and Chief of Police to make temporary/emergency changes for 90 days. The City's Traffic and Parking Board will consider these changes at a public hearing set for Monday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 pm, in the Council Chambers at 301 King St. The Traffic and Parking Board will need to approve this request for these changes to become permanent.
