Severe Thunderstorm Watch Out For DC, NoVA; Hail, Strong Winds

Damaging hail and strong winds are possible, says the National Weather Service, which has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for DC, NoVA.

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch Sunday for the District of Columbia and northern Virginia. The watch means that conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect from 12:55 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 2. Isolated severe thunderstorms could occur Sunday afternoon into early evening, according to a hazardous weather outlook from the weather service. Damaging wind gusts are the main threat, with large hail also possible.

These jurisdictions are included in the severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m. Sunday: Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, Manassas Park, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Stafford, Chantilly, Herndon, Leesburg, Lexington Park, McLean, Reston, Sterling, Warrenton, and Woodbridge.

The National Weather Service forecast for the DC region calls for afternoon showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Some storms could be severe, with hail and gusty winds. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 87. Rain chances are 60 percent. Rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch are likely, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Rain is expected to continue Sunday night with showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8 p.m, then scattered showers and thunderstorms between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Some of the storms could be severe. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 60. Rain chances remain at 60 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
