Severe Thunderstorms, Damaging Winds Possible In NoVA, DC

The National Weather Service says scattered storms could spur damaging winds and large hail.

STERLING, VA—Severe thunderstorms could be on the way Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service. A hazardous weather outlook has been issued through Wednesday night.

Forecasters expect scattered storms around the region. The storms could produce damaging winds and large hail. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

The highest risk area is above Interstate 66 and U.S. Route 50. The area in orange below has the enhanced threat for storms.

The hazardous weather outlook applies to the District of Columbia, Prince William County, Manassas, Manassas Park, Fairfax County, Arlington County, Falls Church, Alexandria, Stafford County, Spotsylvania County, Loudoun County and other Virginia counties.

The region will see more chances of storms in the coming days. Below is the DC forecast through the weekend from the National Weather Service.

  • Wednesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Some storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. Partly sunny, with a high near 96. Heat index values as high as 100. Southwest wind 10 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. At night, there's a chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight. The night will be mostly cloudy with a low around 73 with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.
  • Thursday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 p.m. and overnight before 2 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 89 with a low of 68 at night. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny with a high near 84 and cloudy at night with a low around 65.
  • Saturday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 84 and low of 65 at night. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.
  • Sunday: Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 80. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. After 8 p.m., there's a chance of showers with a low of 61.
