Signs Point to Dairy Godmother Reopening in Del Ray

Dairy Godmother owner Liz Davis: "I am confident that there will be a buyer and that the buyer will open in a timely fashion."

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The owner of The Dairy Godmother, the frozen custard shop that is something of an institution along Del Ray's Mt. Vernon Avenue, said Tuesday she is confident that the shop will reopen in March with a new buyer.

"I am confident that there will be a buyer and that the buyer will open in a timely fashion," Liz Davis said Tuesday in a post on the shop's Facebook page. "I, personally, will not be reopening but The Dairy Godmother will."

Opening nearly 17 years ago as The Del Ray Dreamery, Davis offered Wisconsin-style frozen custard throughout the years along with a bevy of other tasty treats. President Obama visited the shop with his daughters in 2009.

After Davis closed earlier this month for her annual winter hiatus, she surprised many when she announced that she was closing and putting the business up for sale.

The business location, at 2310 Mt. Vernon Ave., is being temporarily taken over, since last Friday, during the hiatus by Salt|Bagel, selling homemade pickles and bagels.

In the meantime, Davis is mulling over offers from those interested in purchasing her business.

"We are closed for our winter break," Davis wrote Tuesday. "When we reopen in March, things will be a little different, but probably not much."

"Thanks to those of you who sent emails with interest in the shop sale. You will be sent information on what is included in the sale and some specifics without numbers. If you are still interested, you will need to email again to Business@thedairygodmother.com."

"No one has been contacted individually," she said. "No decisions have been made. Please enjoy the fun Pop-Up from Number1Son and Bagel Uprising in the meantime."
