Snow Likely In Alexandria Over The Weekend

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Get out your shovels and snow boots, because it looks like snow is on the way. According to the National Weather Service there's a strong likelihood of snow on both Saturday, Jan. 12 and Sunday, Jan. 13 in Alexandria. A hazardous weather outlook has been issued in the case that a winter storm should form.

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang predicts light snow will start Saturday afternoon, but a "period of moderate snow toward evening cannot be ruled out" toward the evening. Snow should remain light through Sunday; if anything, any more moderate to heavy snowfall would happen between late Sunday morning and the early evening.

So how much snow exactly will we get?

NWS predicts 2 to 3 inches in the Alexandria area from Saturday to Sunday evening. At the very least, forecasters predict a 100 percent chance of 0.1 inches of snow or more. By comparison, there's a 96 percent chance of 1 inch or more, 84 percent chance of 2 inches or more and 39 percent chance of 4 inches or more.

Not surprisingly, it will be quite cold. Temperatures will stay in the 20s and mid-30s through the weekend.

The chance of snow will fall as the night goes on. By the time Monday comes around, the snow system will have moved out of the area.

• Friday: Sunny, with a high near 40. The night will turn partly cloudy, with a low around 26.
• Saturday: Snow likely, mainly after 1 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 35. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
• Saturday Night: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 29. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
• Sunday: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a high near 35. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.
• Sunday Night: A chance of snow before 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 25. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.
• Monday: Partly sunny, with a high near 37.
