Underage Alcohol Compliance Checks To Happen In Alexandria

Businesses selling alcohol will be monitored to ensure they're selling to customers 21 and over.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Alexandria businesses selling alcohol will face alcohol compliance checks the week of June 24, the police department announced.

Police will be checking restaurants around Alexandria. No specific locations or times have been announced.

Virginia law prohibits alcohol sales to customers under 21. Checking identification is not required, but it's considered the best way to verify a customer is of age. Virginia ABC conducts its own underage buyer compliance checks.

A business with a liquor license can receive a fine up to $2,000 or have its ABC license revoked for a first-time violation of the underage alcohol sales law. The maximum penalty in Virginia for an employee who sells alcohol to minors is 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
