Virginia Coronavirus Cases Below Average Due To Dashboard Upgrade

The Virginia Department of Health expects a higher total of cases and testing numbers on Monday due to a system upgrade.

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health anticipates less COVID-19 cases and testing numbers reported on Sunday and more on Sunday due to surveillance system upgrades to the COVID-19 dashboard.

On Sunday, 2,558 new cases were reported, well below the seven-day average of 4,619 daily cases. The average of daily cases peaked at 6,166 on Jan. 18. New cases on Sunday include 544 in Northern Virginia, which has an average of 1,167 daily cases. There were 15 new COVID-19 deaths reported statewide.

The average of current COVID-19 hospitalizations also peaked on Jan. 18 at 3,290.9, but numbers have fallen since then. VDH reports 2,511 current patients, including 496 in the intensive care units and 315 on ventilators. Northern Virginia has 466 current COVID-19 patients.

The 2,511 COVID-19 patients are among 13,155 hospital beds occupied in Virginia. There are 16,476 staffed beds. ICU occupancy among all hospital patients is at 83 percent, and ventilator use is at 36 percent, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.

The latest seven-day average of positive PCR tests is 11.8 percent for Virginia as of Jan. 27, while Northern Virginia's average stands at 10.4 percent. The average of daily testing encounters stands at 29,431 for Virginia as a whole and 7,412 for Northern Virginia.

On Saturday, Virginia had 758,477 administered doses of the vaccines. According to the Virginia Department of Health, 7.6 percent of the population has been vaccinated with at least one dose so far, while 109,465 people on the Phase 1a and 1b priority lists have been fully vaccinated.

Virginia is averaging over 31,000 doses administered per day, and 8.1 percent of the population has at least the first dose. To date, 805,695 doses have been administered and 1,221,350 doses have been distributed in the state. There are 688,561 people with at least one dose and 117,134 people fully vaccinated.

  • Falls Church: 291 cases, 19 hospitalizations, six deaths; no changes
  • Loudoun County: 20,384 cases, 765 hospitalizations, 181 deaths; increase of 107 cases
  • Manassas: 3,696 cases, 155 hospitalizations, 33 deaths; increase of 10 cases
  • Manassas Park: 1,070 cases, 66 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of three cases
