Community Service Day involves hundreds of volunteers who will join together on Friday, May 3 to volunteer at dozens of nonprofit agencies throughout the city.  Site coordinators are needed to assist with project development between now and May 3, and overseeing 3-5 sites on the date of the event.

Friday, May 3, 2013—Volunteer Photographers

Volunteer photographers are needed on Friday, May 3, 2013 from 10 am to 2 pm to photograph teams working at Community Service Day project sites and at the Market Square celebration from 2 to 4 p.m.

Thursday, May 9, and Saturday, May 11, 2013—Alexandria Bike/Pedestrian Counting Project

The Alexandria Bike/Pedestrian Counting Project has been helpful for documenting increases in bicycling and walking/running in the past two years. This project informs the City’s transportation planning efforts, such as documenting the need for new bike lanes and new bike routes. Please see the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee Website for details. Volunteers are needed between 5 and 7 p.m. May 9 and 12 to 2 p.m. May 11.

Alexandria Childhood Obesity Action Network — Garden Volunteers

Alexandria Visitors Center at Ramsay House — Alexandria Tourism Volunteers

ALIVE! — Last Saturday Food Distribution Volunteers

Community Lodgings — Expert Budget Mentors

Friends of Guest House — Receptionist, Driver Volunteers and GED Tutors

Mentors work with women recently released from incarceration to return to a productive role in society by assisting with job searches and teaching residents to help themselves. Assistants answer phones, doors, and help with projects in the morning/afternoon. Drivers with flexible schedule and their own vehicle transport clients to appointments during the day and evening. Liberty's Promise – Job Skills Workshop Volunteers

Literacy Council of Northern Virginia — Basic Literacy Tutors

Volunteers are needed to tutor English-speaking adults seeking to improve their reading and writing skills. Each tutor is trained, matched with a student, and encouraged to meet weekly for an hour and a half to help the student improve their reading and writing skills. Tutors have the flexibility of setting their own schedules with their student to meet at any mutually convenient public location in Alexandria. Medical Reserve Corps—Emergency Volunteer Training

Volunteers are needed to support public health in an emergency or disaster. Volunteers will receive free preparedness training and participate in drills and exercises. Training in a variety of topics, including public health, emergency management, CPR, First Aid, and more. Many positions in the MRC do not require medical skills.
