What's Open, Closed For Christmas 2018 In Alexandria

Different services around Alexandria will have closings for Christmas or limited hours on Christmas Eve.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Christmas Eve falls on a Monday this year, so many services will be closed for a long weekend and remain closed through Christmas Day. Many services will be closed for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Alexandria, including government offices, libraries and schools. A few services such as Metro and the animal shelter will have limited hours on Christmas Eve.

Here are the openings and closings to know on and around Monday, Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve) and Tuesday, Dec. 25 (Christmas Day).

City Offices: Closed Dec. 24-25.

Alexandria City Public Schools: Closed Dec. 24-Jan. 2.

State Offices: The Alexandria Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, the Alexandria Circuit Court, the Alexandria General District Court, and the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court (520 King St.) will be closed on Dec. 24-25. The Department of Motor Vehicles office at 2681 Mill Road will be closed Dec. 22-25.

Animal Shelter: The Vola Lawson Animal Shelter will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 24 with animal viewing beginning at noon. The Animal Shelter will be closed on Dec. 25.

DASH and King Street Trolley: There will be no regular DASH service after 7 p.m. on Dec. 24. Any trip scheduled to start at or before 7 p.m. will operate entirely. Any trip that is scheduled to start at 7:01 p.m. or later will not operate. There will be no DASH service on Dec. 25. The free King Street Trolley will operate on its regular schedule on Dec. 24-25 every 10-15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., between the King Street Metro Station and the waterfront.See www.dashbus.com for more information.

Emergency Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency mental health services or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 1-888-832-3858; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

Health Facilities: The Alexandria Health Department (4480 King Street), Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard Street), and Teen Wellness Center at T.C. Williams High School (3330 King Street) will be closed on Dec. 24-25.

Historic sites: All City of Alexandria museums will be closed on Dec. 24-25. The Black History Museum will be closed Dec. 22-25, and the Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site will be closed Dec. 23-25. For more information, visit the Office of Historic Alexandria website.

Libraries: Closed Dec. 24-25.

Metrorail: On Dec. 25, Metrorail will operate on a Sunday schedule from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. There is no track work scheduled for Dec. 24-25. For more information, visit www.wmata.com.

Metrobus: On Nov. 22, Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule www.wmata.com.

Parking: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits on Dec. 25. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on Dec. 25.

Recreation and Arts Centers: City recreation centers will be closed on Dec. 24-25. The Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open on Dec. 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, and will be closed on Dec. 25.

Trash Pickup: Residential refuse and recycling will be collected on Dec. 24 but not Dec. 25. Collection normally scheduled for Dec. 25-27 will be delayed by one day. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Center (3224 Colvin Street) will be closed on Dec. 24.
