ALEXANDRIA, VA — As Memorial Day approaches, families will celebrate the unofficial start of summer. That means backyard cookouts, vacations, or simply enjoying the three-day weekend.

Memorial Day is also a time to remember those who have died while serving in the military. The city and Friends of Rocky Versace will host a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 31 at 11 a.m. The location is Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial outside the Mount Vernon Recreation Center. The ceremony will honor Captain Rocky Versace, a posthumous Medal of Honor recipient, the 67 other Alexandrians who died while serving during the Vietnam War, and all fallen military heroes. The program will include reciting the names of Alexandria's 68 Vietnam War fallen heroes, patriotic music, a tribute to Captain Versace written by a fellow POW, wreath laying by Captain Versace's USMA 1959 classmates, Sounding of "Taps," and singing of "God Bless America."

The annual Alexandria Jazz Festival will also return for Memorial Day weekend. Scheduled for Saturday, May 29 at Oronoco Bay Park, the festival will require ticketed admission and assigned seating. The lineup includes critical-acclaimed performers Joel Ross "Good Vibes," Eric Byrd Trio, VERONNEAU, and Cubano Groove.
